The Residential Adviser (RA) role is to assist with the social and academic well-being of assigned boarding students, including rotational supervision during days, evenings, and weekends, and participation in weekend and teaching programs.
This position is directly responsible for assisting with the pastoral care of 44–45 assigned boarding students while building strong relationships with all boarders. The RA works closely with a Senior House Adviser who leads academic and social advising and communicates with parents.
Secondary responsibilities include participating in the supervision rotation of approximately 88 boarding students who live on campus; supporting weekend programs; and engaging in professional development opportunities through upper school classrooms and the Wernham & West Centre for Learning (WWCFL).
The UCC RA program offers new teachers or individuals entering the profession a formal pathway to develop instructional skills. RAs receive training in academic coaching and build a digital portfolio of work while receiving mentorship from experienced faculty members.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
Student Supervision
- Ensure that UCC’s regulations, ideals, and standards are maintained;
- Supervise and monitor breakfast attendance;
- Supervise compulsory study time after dinner;
- Supervise weekend programs, weekend leave processes, and late-night supervision following weekday curfew;
- Update and review logs/databases related to student attendance, weekend program participation, and communication with families;
- Assist with class coverage when teachers are absent;
- On a rotating basis, supervise weekend meals and ensure weekend curfew compliance;
- Create, supervise, and organize weekend programming;
- Oversee weekend leave arrangements for boarders.
Program Participation
- Participate in the “New To Blue” new student orientation on Labour Day weekend;
- Participate in co-curricular programming such as coaching, theatre, music, and community service;
- Attend all required meetings, activities, and morning assembly;
- Engage in professional development through the WWCFL;
- Maintain an active role in the day school community through advising responsibilities, WWCFL;
- Testing Centre support, on-call supply rotation, and potential teaching opportunities (based on qualifications and experience).
Student Wellbeing
- Model the school’s shared ideals;
- Encourage students in their academic and personal development;
- Provide academic support in area(s) of subject specialty to individuals or groups;
- Be available for emergency care assistance, including accompanying students to hospital visits;
- Attend and support students in house meetings;
- Coordinate and run games, activities, and sports with boarding groups;
- Mentored by Master Teacher: Opportunity (not required);
- Observe classes;
- Team-teach with faculty;
- Develop lesson plans and teach independently with support from the Master Teacher;
- Assist with the development of written tests;
- Participate in marking assessments.
Job Requirements
Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:
- University or college degree required;
- Bachelor of Education with OCT qualification is an asset;
- Experience in advising, coaching, or residential life is an asset;
- Fluency in a second language is an asset;
- Philosophy, principles, objectives, and programs of the school/college;
- School/college policies and standards for boarding students;
- Principles and methodology of student guidance and coaching;
- Ability to identify student issues requiring intervention (academic, social, behavioural, or health-related) and communicate them to the Senior House Adviser;
- Ability to adapt approaches to support full participation in academic and co-curricular programming;
- Ability to build trusting relationships with individuals and groups of students;
- Strong communication skills when interacting with faculty, staff, and parents;
- Strong time management and priority-setting abilities;
- Collaborative, approachable, adaptable, and available during evenings and weekends.
Accommodation:
- The successful candidate must live in the bachelor apartment provided within the boarding community;
- It is expected that the successful candidate would take most meals in the school dining room.
