OVERVIEW:
Pickering College is an independent day and boarding school in Newmarket, Ontario. We are a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, and our co-educational environment and holistic approach ensure that each student’s unique talents—academic, artistic, athletic, and altruistic—are nurtured. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Boarding and Health Services, House Parents provide support to the boarding students and program. House Parents function, together with the House Directors and Boarding Dons, as a team to ensure that the school’s Mission Statement is upheld.
House Parents provide a supportive, caring environment where our students and summer campers can grow, develop and thrive both personally and academically. This position will nurture healthy relationships between our students through evening and weekend supervision, activities (planning and execution) and trip chaperoning.
The House Parent will provide an environment that promotes emotional growth, personal development and maturation. The House Parent is a responsible member of the boarding team. The House Parent is required to live on campus in a 12-month position in an apartment within the residence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as role models and mentors to the students/campers. They are to be available to offer support and encouragement to students as well as guidance and direction. They assist students to develop and grow in a caring community.
- Attend breakfast on a rotational schedule to check in students and do a sweep of the residences in the morning to ensure all students are in class.
- House Parents are required to work on a rotational basis to cover the residences in the evenings, overnight and weekends (including long weekends). They provide meal coverage for breakfast and dinner and provide on call coverage to the residences.
- This role is responsible for the overall health and safety in the boarding/camping community and overall programming for students.
- The House Parents are responsible for one Summer Camp Session each year, where they coordinate and oversee the summer camp program.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
· University Graduate
· Camp/Residence experience preferred
· Experience working with adolescents preferred
· Mature and responsible with initiative and leadership abilities
· Positive interpersonal skills and competent judgement
· Athletic/sports coaching interest
· Superior time management skills
· First Aid and CPR/AED certification required
· ‘E' Class Driver's Licence (not mandatory)
· A current Police Record Check is a condition of employment
