About Hillfield Strathallan College
Founded in 1901, Hillfield Strathallan College (HSC) offers a seamless academic journey from 18 months to 18 years. Located on a 50-acre campus on Hamilton's West Mountain, HSC provides a unique educational pathway for students through four school offerings: Junior, Montessori, Middle and Senior. HSC prepares students to live with purpose – to understand their world, inspire, lead, act, and make a difference in their own unique ways.
Reporting to the Chair of Student Wellbeing, in collaboration with the Senior School Principal, the College Counsellor works closely with staff, families, and community partners to support our students' physical and emotional needs during school days at Hillfield Strathallan College and to ensure students are set up to perform academically. The College Counsellor assists students in resolving personal, emotional, and social matters affecting their overall health, wellbeing, and ability to learn effectively. The position will primarily support students in Grades 9 to 12; however, it will work collaboratively with the wellbeing team to ensure overall student support from PK through to Grade 12.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide social-emotional support for students;
- Work alongside the College’s Health Services, Learning Services, School Leadership, and Guidance teams to provide overall support to students;
- Connect students and families with professional support both in and outside of school;
- Effectively relate to and communicate with children, parents, and professionals;
- Intervene with students to decrease risk factors and to increase the presence of protective factors;
- Document and maintain records of services provided to each student as required by licensing standards, provincial legislation, and school policies; and
- Develops and/or coordinates educational workshops, in-service training and professional development for the HSC Community
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND ATTRIBUTES OF OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology, or a related field
- Membership with a relevant professional association (e.g., Ontario Association of Social Workers) is considered an asset
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical counselling or psychotherapy experience, preferably with children and adolescents
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience with equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices
- Experience collaborating with educators to support the diverse learning, social-emotional, and mental health needs of students
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and consultation skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary school team
- A criminal record check is required as a condition of employment.
